It’s rather fitting for a show that found its fanbase thanks to the streaming service, which allowed new viewers to binge-watch it from the beginning. Having wrapped up five seasons of his Emmy-winning AMC series, creator Vince Gilligan continues his story with the TV movie “El Camino,” now streaming on Netflix. And “Arroz” is Spanish for rice.Just when you thought it was over, “Breaking Bad” comes back for more. Holly is the name of Walter White’s daughter – and of Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan’s partner, Holly Rice. Todd’s apartment stands at the intersection of Holly Avenue and Arroz Road. Mike gives his pep talk about Jesse moving to Alaska on the same riverbank where he will die after Walt shoots him. The Netflix easter eggs have just gone inter-dimensional. In the Black Mirror episode USS Callister, actor Jesse Plemons played a creepy computer programmer with a fantasy life as a Captain Kirk wannabe. Todd’s apartment is stuffed with Star Trek paraphernalia. What was in the missive? We’ll never know – surely how it should be. In his flashback, Todd warns Jesse that if he escapes then he will "have to visit the little boy”. Jesse’s last act before heading into the frozen wastes is to give Ed a letter for Brock – young son of Andrea, Jesse’s girlfriend and one of Todd’s victims. Has Jesse taken the reverse journey? 14. The letter to Brock He went from mild mannered every-dude to crazed criminal. It’s the same colour as the one Walt sports in the first episode of Breaking Bad. Jesse drives into the sunset wearing a cream sweater. The flashback is thought to have occurred after the season two episode 4 Days Out in which Walt and Jesse become marooned in their meth lab in the desert and Walt almost dies of thirst. “Hydrate”, says Jesse as he and Walt share a booth. In an opening shot of Albuquerque, we see the building that previously house Gus Fring’s fast food front. But one of the background TV news reports features the lawyer who clashed with Kim over Huell’s arrest in the most recent season of Better Call Saul. Saul’s bodyguard Huell is absent from El Camino. A similar sequence plays out in El Camino as he holds up a crawly while waiting outside the welders’s hideout. We saw that in the season two episode six episode Peekaboo when he didn’t have the heart to crush a bug crawling on his hand. He may be a maniacal drug dealer – but Jesse also has a cuddly side. He also owns a snow globe of him and Lydia. It’s in his apartment, in a glass case where two figures appear to recreate the moment in which Todd shot Drew. 2. Drew’s spiderĬuddly sociopath Todd kept Drew’s tarantula after killing the child. Farewell Lydia (until season five of Better Call Saul). That’s confirmed as Jesse drives into the night and a news bulletin announces a woman in Houston has been poisoned. We faded to black after Walt had informed the scheming Madrigal executive that he had replaced the sweetener she puts in her tea with ricin – implying she has imbibed something fatal. “It’s better to take those decisions for yourself.” Cut to Jesse driving through Alaska and toward his future.Īs we let those chilling words settle here, then, is an exhausting though possibly not exhaustive rundown of the movie’s many call-backs to the rest of the series. “I’ve gone where the universe take some my whole life,” says Jane (Krysten Ritter). A business degree would be the perfect fit. More than that, Jesse’s success as a drug dealer suggests a talent for wheeling and dealing. And then, in his most patrician tones, he expresses confidence that his acolyte could one day go to college. Walt forgets (again) that Jesse graduated from high school. He and Walt sit down to breakfast and shoot the breeze. Walter White (Bryan Cranston) saunters back into Jesse’s life – and ours – as Pinkman reflects on the good old days before their criminal collaboration metastasised into a waking nightmare. However – and this is where the spoilers really start – the biggest walks-ons are right at the end. And he turns to the same fixer who helped Saul Goodman escape to Nebraska and start over as a Cinnabon drone. He reunites with old sidekicks Badger and Skinny Peter. The most obvious nod comes via a parade of cameos as Jesse Pinkman’s attempt to flee the flaming crucible of Walter White’s demise forces him to confront his past. Like a mobile meth lab primed to overheat, the new Breaking Bad sequel movie, El Camino, is bursting with call-backs, winks and conspicuous tips of its black pork pie hat.
